With the latest media reports of green waste bin charges and the portfolio holder at Rochford District Council refusing to rule out future green waste bin charges, residents could be set to face more charges in addition to their Council Tax post May elections.
I think there have to alternatives to more taxation. Reducing the costs of collecting and disposing of green waste would be my preferred option. For example, more use could be made of composting. Not only does the Council need to actively promote composting bins but perhaps subsidise the cost, but also provide more information for residents on how to efficiently compost. It won’t be for everyone, but the Council does need to help change habits instead of just levying another tax.
